High Fiber Cereal Showdown: Comparing the Most Popular Brands

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a majority of women (90%) and men (97%) fail to consume the recommended amount of fiber every day. Consuming high-fiber cereal can help you increase your daily fiber intake significantly. (1)

In this article, we are going to look at high-fiber cereal products and what makes them a great choice or not a great choice.

What is a high-fiber cereal?

According to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Food Labeling Guide, a cereal labeled as “High In” or “Excellent Source Of” fiber must contain at least 20 percent of the Daily Value for fiber.

For reference, the FDA and USDA use the following guidelines to determine if an ingredient or product is considered low, high, or a good source of a specific nutrient.

  • 5% DV or less of a nutrient per serving is considered low.
  • 20% DV or more of a nutrient per serving is considered high.
  • 10 to 19% of the Daily Value of a particular vitamin or nutrient per serving.

In order for a cereal to be considered high in fiber, it must provide 20% or more of the daily recommended intake for fiber. The Daily Recommended Intake of fiber for adults is 28 grams. (2)

What cereals are highest in fiber?

Some of the cereals that are highest in fiber include Fiber One Original (18 g), Bran Buds (17 g), and Smart Bran (17 g). Each cereal listed provides more than 55% of the recommended daily intake of fiber.

Consuming more than double the % Daily Value (High in -20%) for a single serving of one ingredient should be done with caution and under medical supervision or instruction. Eating more than half of the fiber you need each day in one sitting can lead to bloating, gas, cramps, and constipation.

The symptoms of eating too much fiber are painful and uncomfortable, and as a dietitian and nutrition nerd, I can tell you from experience that this is the case. On several occasions, I have added too many fiber-containing ingredients to my recipes and meal prep. Not releasing until halfway through Monday; why I can’t seem to stop farting.
